Beatling around Liverpool - October 2019
It’s interesting to hear all of the things that nobody tells you, then it strikes you, they did. You just weren’t listening. We’ve discussed talks and mentioned galleries throughout the years and, did I go? No, there were some extremely good reasons why I didn’t go to many of them but other times, well…
This year I’ve been to some talks and I have others planned. Are they useful? Usually yes, everything should be a learning experience. Even if you think you knew 99% of the knowledge being transmitted, the 1% sometimes makes all of the difference. More often than not, you saunter in knowing nothing and, hopefully, you leave excited and enlightened.
In this semester of our final year some of us visited the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool https://openeye.org.uk/.
Walking through the streets of Liverpool we found an outdoor exhibition of large wall portraits by our own Dr Yan Wang Preston. Her series “He”, was Yan’s quest to discover what a man should be. It featured Chinese students, in locations on the beaches near Blackpool, captured by Yan’s 5”X4” camera. It is making me consider my own photography; I amble around pointing my camera at random scenes – I now understand the need to become more focussed (pun intended).
